Volunteers needed to serve in Colombia | The volunteers will have the opportunity to serve with one or more of the four churches, (Bogota, Colombia Barrio Ferias, Barrio el Quindío, Barrio Bosa San Pablo y Barrio Bosa Laureles) in areas such as: evangelism, discipleship, christian education, youth ministry, couples ministry, children ministry (VBS), family ministry, leadership training and encouragement, training and capacity building, health clinics, practical work (painting, construction, etc), worship services (preaching, teaching, music, etc. This is a Bible institute intended only for indigenous or tribal people to study the Bible and other practical courses. Students come from different cultures, languages, backgrounds, lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and regions, such as: jungle, desert, countryside, snowy mountains... Therefore, since the institute is a transcultural environment including having around 15 ethnic tribes, among our students; and 5 countries represented, among the staff or volunteer missionaries; those who seek to have a missionary experience with us must be willing to serve, care, learn and share with modesty, prudence, humility, simplicity, have a teachable spirit, and love for thy neighbor. Volunteers should never underestimate indigenous peoples but be open to listen and learn from their life experiences, their wisdom and vision. Never call our indigenous peoples “Indians” since, in Colombia, this is nowadays a forbidden word because, for many years, it was used in a derogatory way. The best months of the year to serve alongside students are: Feb 1st till June 10th or July 15th till November 10th. Also, the Institute is an interdenominational, Christian evangelical Bible institute. It is important for each volunteer who considers visiting and serving, to embrace humility and servant heart. It is important: · To understand and accept the fact that every human being from every nation or ethnic group in the world that hasn’t been reached or has never heard the Gospel, is in great need of hope, repentance, forgiveness, redemption, restoration, and transformation through it; needs to have the opportunity to listen and know to become a believer and God’s child, and a Jesus’ follower; or at least needs to have the opportunity to openly refuse or cannot be forced to make any decision. To understand that we are all noticed by people around us, so our lives and deeds (words, conduct, love, spirit, faith and purity) are to “shine before others, that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven”. The type of ministry through which the volunteers can serve will depend on the skills, abilities, gifts, preparation, experience, and duration of service. The areas of needs are to work in the kitchen, do cleaning, maintenance, construction, health care, discipleship, preaching, teaching, leading worship, etc. A willing and servant's heart is what is most needed. Any volunteers that will serve in either one of the churches or at the Institute, or both, should: · be a proven follower of Jesus, with a good testimony, and an active membership at a local christian church. · be willing to love and to be loved. Although we must do so, your main purpose for coming is not for supporting minority cause, but for the Great Commission, based on God’s love. · understand, believe, value, dignify, encourage, and support God’s image in every mankind, man and woman, male and female (no matter the age), as God made them from one same lineage, although from different tongues, tribes and nations. · understand, believe, value, dignify, encourage, promote, and support family and marriage (as intended by God in the beginning) between man and woman, as part of God’s plan for His greater purpose to be fulfilled. · be open and flexible about different (but not anti biblical) ways of doing worship , Dress code is conservative at worship services. · be mindful to promote God’s kingdom, and not a denomination, doctrine, or title. · understand that each part of the body of Christ, and any kind of service in God’s kingdom is equally important and needed for the rest of the body to do God’s will (whether it’s cleaning, cooking, teaching, or preaching). · be flexible in the face of changes that may occur to previous plans or logistic. · Volunteers cannot bring, nor wear golden jewelry and expensive belongings; we are not responsible for theft or loss. · Volunteers cannot make promises or give money to anyone during the mission trip. Any help or donation should FIRST be consulted with and addressed through the global servant. If a volunteer shares his or her contact number with somebody, and receive a request, either during their visit or after leaving the country, it is important to inform the Global Servant of such request. · receive a Short-Term Mission Experience training before coming; however, those that are seeking to serve for 2 weeks or more, should be willing to receive an additional short training on transcultural missions, focused on Colombian tribes. Although, for some Christians, smoking and drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages are part of their lifestyle, for most Christians in Colombia this is not part of the Christian lifestyle; since lots of them have been or are in the process of being transformed from a disruptive way of living, which included this as a destructive vice for them and their families. Therefore, smoking and drinking aren’t allowed at any place, any area or surrounding area, and any time where volunteers will be seen (or even smelled) by those they will serve. If you think you can’t spend your time on the mission field without doing these activities, please REFRAIN from coming. Not able to host any volunteers from 12/25 - 1/10. |
